My name is Jenna Schoock and I teach and practice a traditional method of yoga called Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. I’ve been a practitioner of yoga for over 8 years now, and in early 2015 I set out to deepen my practice by studying the Ashtanga method at a teacher training in India; I have been teaching ever since.

I’ve practiced and taught different styles of yoga over the years, but I first fell in love with yoga in an Ashtanga class so I’ve always felt connected it. My teachings and my understanding of yoga have always been heavily influenced by the Ashtanga tradition, therefore in 2016 I decided to commit to the Ashtanga method of daily “Mysore Style” self-practice. I also sought out some of the most respected Ashtanga teachers around and started traveling regularly to learn from them. Recently, I even had the honor of attending practice and conference with the master of the lineage, R. Sharath Jois. The knowledge my teachers have shared with me has been incredible, but their teachings only really have value when I practice them. So, for me, the most important part of deepening my practice or my understanding of yoga has simply been to practice - every day.

When I’m not on my mat practicing or teaching, I’m usually studying for a degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science. I’ve always been fascinated by different societies, and being a truth seeker I’m always looking for a deeper understanding. This usually entails some direct experience, so naturally I love to travel. Vacations are nice but what really makes a trip special for me is when it’s hard work. I like to really get to know a place firsthand. I want to find my own way around and navigate through the social customs and language barriers. There’s nothing better than getting lost or not knowing for sure if you’re on the right bus or what the meal is you just ordered.

When I’m traveling, one of my favorite things to do is take pictures. I love to try and capture a little piece of the beauty of a place or it’s uniqueness. This is something I’m also doing when I’m at home on Vancouver Island. In some ways it’s the perfect place to live because you don’t have to go far to find a new place to explore and basically everything is stunningly beautiful.

If you’ve read this far you can probably tell my lifestyle makes me a bit of a loner. Let’s just say I do a lot of solo activities. But I’m actually a really social person and so, if I’m honest, the reason I love being a part of the Young Professionals organization is mostly just because it’s a good time. It’s made up of open minded, professional people who also happen to be a lot of fun. To me, networking isn’t just handing out business cards and making contacts. It’s about building relationships and connections with people. When I first moved to Campbell River I didn’t know anybody and I didn’t feel connected to this place or like I was part of the community. Taking part in this organization changed that. I’m so grateful to the members who volunteer their time to keep it going so that other newcomers have a chance to not just live and work here, but also become part of this community.
